Debut EP penned from private diaries – a message of hope and overcoming past trauma
Rae Leigh is an emerging Australian singer songwriter living in the Gold Coast. She released 5 singles in 2020 and when the COVID lockdown hit the industry she took the initiative to continue to collaborate, learn and support the music industry by launching a new international acclaimed podcast called Songwriter Trysts.
Rae has received national and community radio support with her first music video, directed by Duncan Toombs, premiering on CMT. Her last show at Home of the Arts (HOTA) received raving reviews and she is excited about supporting Adam Brand at the Tasmanian Rosebery Carnival Fun Fair on the 27th of March.
Rae Leigh’s EP shares a message of survival, connection and love. Rae Leigh collaborates with amazing songwriters from all over the world who share in the story and the power of love. Music saved her life and many of these songs are from Rae’s personal diary and written in private, with no initial intention for anyone else to hear. Rae vulnerably shares her experiences with the hope to inspire anyone who has gone through similar pain or adversity to be strong and be ‘Powered By Love’.
Rae Leigh is celebrating her release with a live ticketed show at Vinnies Dive Bar in the Gold Coast at 7pm on the 31st of March supported by amazing local singer songwriters. It’s going to be a fun night of music, connection and storytelling.
*Trigger Warning for Rae Leigh’s Story*
When Rae was three years old she began a journey of abuse which continued till she was twelve by a close relative, and local church member, leaving her with severe trauma, depression, anxiety and complex PTSD. It left her feeling isolated and confused as she had no one to talk to about it and struggled to understand what was going on. Being unable to articulate what she was feeling, she found solace and freedom in the art of songwriting.
“It was how I learnt to cope, through art and through expressing my emotions in what felt to me was a safe space”
Rae’s journey of healing began when she found out that she was expecting her first child. This gave her the strength to report the perpetrator to police which resulted in a successful public prosecution court case. Rae is one of the lucky ones in which her voice was heard in the justice system and the law was able to then protect other children from this person.
She knows that she is not alone and that her experience is unfortunately not an uncommon story and too often people have not been heard. Women all over the world are carrying this burden and struggling with the mental health repercussions of sexual abuse.
Rae’s healing journey has included clinical therapy, psychology, spiritual and physical embodiment and emotional reconnection with her inner child. Rae opened the door to music again and fell in love with country music at a retreat in Tamworth.
“It was at a time where I was at my lowest and the family I made in country music nurtured and held me in my pain.”
Rae wishes to inspire and encourage people to step out of the darkness into the light. Sharing these songs with everyone is an incredible journey that’s just beginning. It’s been so good to share vulnerably and to be received so beautifully by the music industry and is extremely grateful to everyone who has supported her single ‘Find A Better Day’.
