There’s something quietly powerful about an artist who knows when to wait. In an industry that often rewards constant output and relentless visibility, patience can feel like rebellion. For Dutch country-pop singer-songwriter Angie Flare, that patience has paid off beautifully. After more than three years since her last release, she’s back with “Curls,” a joyful, mid-tempo country-pop anthem that celebrates individuality in all its perfectly imperfect glory.
At its core, “Curls” is exactly what the title promises—and so much more. It’s a song about embracing the parts of ourselves that don’t always behave, don’t always fall into line, and certainly don’t always do what they’re told. In Angie’s world, curls aren’t just hair; they’re a symbol of personality, resilience, and creative independence. The result is a track that feels both personal and universal, breezy yet intentional, playful without ever being lightweight.
A Song That Simmered—And That Matters
Fans of Angie’s 2022 EP, With the Car Running, know her as a writer who blends modern country polish with emotional sincerity. “Curls” picks up that thread but adds a new layer of confidence. This is an artist who sounds fully at ease in her own voice—musically and thematically.
The song’s origin story reads like a love letter to Nashville songwriting culture. While visiting Music City in August 2022, Angie caught a writers-round performance by Abigayle Oakley at Cabana Taps. Oakley’s clever, wordplay-rich song about Las Vegas sparked something. Instead of a hometown or a city, Angie turned the lens inward—toward her own rebellious curls and what they represent.
That spark turned into a brainstorm session back at her B&B (as so many good Nashville stories do), and eventually into a leap of faith: a direct message on Instagram. Thankfully, Oakley said yes. A Zoom co-write followed, ideas bounced across oceans, and before long “Curls” was born—already strong on the page, but not yet finished telling its story.
From Live Favorite to Studio Standout
Sometimes artists know when a song is special because audiences tell them first. That was the case with “Curls.” As Angie began playing it live, the response was immediate and affirming. There’s something about a song that invites listeners to smile at themselves, to feel seen without being preached at. It deserved a proper recording—one that honored both its message and its momentum.
That chance came during Angie’s return to Nashville in October 2024. Encouraged by friends and armed with courage and timing, she arranged last-minute band recordings just outside the city in Gallatin, Tennessee. The studio—run by brothers Gabriel and Gideon Klein inside a former pharmacy—set the scene for something special.
Leading the session was producer and multi-instrumentalist Smith Curry, whose résumé includes work with Willie Nelson, Taylor Swift, and Jason Aldean. That pedigree shows—not in flashy excess, but in the song’s assured, effortless feel. The band sounds locked in, warm, and intentional, giving “Curls” the lift it needs without ever overshadowing the lyric.
Bridging Nashville and the Netherlands
With the band tracks complete, Angie brought the song home to finish what she’d started. Vocals and final production were handled by Nick Jongejan, widely regarded as the Netherlands’ leading modern country producer. His touch adds clarity and cohesion, blending Nashville authenticity with contemporary European polish. The final mix feels radio-ready but still organic—a balance many chase, few achieve.
Lyrically, “Curls” lands somewhere between self-love anthem and gentle manifesto. It doesn’t shout its message; it invites you in. The groove is relaxed but purposeful, the melody instantly familiar, and Angie’s vocal delivery carries a knowing smile. You can hear the years in it—the living, the waiting, the trusting of instinct.
Visuals, Community, and Celebration
To complete the release, Angie filmed a music video in one of the most beautiful hair salons in the Netherlands, surrounded by friends who helped bring the song to life. It’s a fitting visual extension of the track’s message: community, authenticity, and the beauty of showing up exactly as you are. The video is set to arrive soon, and if the song is any indication, it will be as warm and affirming as the music itself.
Why “Curls” Matters Right Now
In a genre that’s increasingly embracing vulnerability, “Curls” feels right on time. It sits comfortably alongside the modern country-pop movement that values personality as much as polish—think the emotional openness of Kelsea Ballerini or the self-aware charm of early Taylor Swift, filtered through Angie’s distinctly European perspective.
More than anything, this song feels earned. It carries the weight of three and a half years of patience, growth, and belief. And that makes listening to it all the more satisfying.
